India’s Wholesale Inflation Goes Double-Digit

-

Twelve months ago, you could have called wholesale inflation in India a non-event. September 2025 came in at 0.13% year-on-year. Then September 2026 arrived at 11.39%, up from 9.92% in August.

Look at what has not moved as much. Retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September from 4.83%. Prices between businesses are rising at more than twice the pace of prices paid by consumers. If that gap is real, somebody in the chain is paying the difference. The data suggests the answer is not yet the shopper.

It started with energy

The pressure began with fuel. In August, mineral oils inflation rose to 38.48% from 32.40%, and crude petroleum and natural gas rose to 34.41% from 26.99%. In September, fuel and power inflation climbed again, to 25.85% from 22.93%.

Energy is rarely a problem that stays in one place. It sits underneath freight, packaging, chemicals, metals and food logistics, so a spike there tends to spread. That is exactly what September showed. Manufactured products inflation rose to 9.76% from 8.37%, and primary articles rose to 8.67% from 7.76%. In August, primary articles and basic metals had eased, which hinted the pressure might be narrowing. September reversed that. Every major group accelerated at once.

The cost side is still building

The more telling number may be one most people skip. The government’s trial input price index for manufacturing rose to 106.1 in September from 104.2 in August. That index is the bill manufacturers are receiving. It is still climbing, which suggests the squeeze at the factory gate has not peaked.

Food is joining in late. Wholesale food inflation has risen every month since February 2026, after being negative in six of the eight months between June 2025 and January 2026. A year of falling food prices turned into a steady climb, and it is now adding breadth to a story that began with energy.

So where is the gap going?

The wedge between WPI and CPI is the part worth thinking about. The two indices have different baskets and weights, so they are not directly comparable. Even so, a spread of nearly six percentage points says that a large share of cost increases has not yet reached the consumer.

That leaves two possibilities. Retail prices could rise toward wholesale, which would make this a pass-through story. Or wholesale pressure could ease, which would depend largely on whether energy cools. Until one of them happens, margins in input-heavy and consumer-facing sectors are the shock absorber. It also leaves little room for anyone hoping monetary conditions will loosen soon.

Why the next data point matters

September may be the start of a plateau, or it may be a spike. Two things make it hard to tell right now:

  • The data is provisional. September’s figure was compiled with a weighted response rate of 83.4%. Revisions can be meaningful: June’s final reading was revised up to 9.97% from 9.87%.
  • The series is new. These numbers use a 2022-23 base year, so comparisons with older history need care.

India went from near-zero wholesale inflation to double digits in about a year. The cause was energy, the spread has been into manufacturing and food, and the retail numbers have not yet caught up. For now, the most interesting question in the data is who is carrying the gap, and for how long.
